Weligama Beach Break

Weligama Beach Break, long sand bars producing many left & rights at varying tide times. Shallow beach entry, no reef or rocks, safe to learn. Beach side surf schools & board hire. Best at sunrise.

Weligama is a great place to learn to surf. There are many lefts and rights that appear at different tides. Holds up to 5ft in a big swell, kook carnage. Expect learner drop-ins and to make some new buddies out the back.

Easily be surfed when small with no effort to get to the back with a shallow sandy beach floor. There many local surf schools and it is easy boards and lessons when you arrive. More advanced surfers can find reef breaks close by at Mirissa, Jungle Beach and Gurubebla.

As Weligama is in a sheltered bay it is protected somewhat from the wind, if the rest of the coast is blown out and a bit mushy there is a good chance it will be working here. With a bit of skill you can get a decent 400m ride on a slow, low power wave.

One of the best places in South Sri Lanka to discover a connection with the ocean and pop your “getting stoked” cherry. Get there for sunrise when its empty and get some relay nice, green waves, most of all have fun.

Take a beer or a mango juice at Sumith’s Catamaran. The crab is excellent, the service is step-by-step, so take your time.

Some great Go Pro Clips of Weligama Beach Break and Coconuts, Gurubebila. And a catchy tune with explicit lyrics ;). Creds to the surfers, you know who you are big love.
